Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assesses your existing skills and knowledge against specific competency units, based on your industry experience and formal education or training.
This process may allow you to gain recognition for single units or entire qualifications based on your skills and experience, provided you submit sufficient evidence, such as:

  • Completed training records

  • Work documents

  • Academic transcripts

  • Reference letters

RPL is a non-teaching pathway; your evidence is assessed to confirm competency, and additional training may be recommended if needed.  Fees apply for RPL.
Gaining workplace support
It’s important that you discuss your RPL application with people in your workplace.
Your workplace will be asked to help you to participate in RPL. For example, a workplace supervisor will be asked to verify your skills and knowledge, and to assist with workplace assessment and assessor visits.

Application Process

Initial interview, followed by self-evaluation

An assessor will contact you to arrange an interview to discuss your skills, experience and RPL eligibility.  You will be required to complete the RPL Self-Evaluation by providing as much information about your previous experience as you can.

Prior to proceeding to Step 1 of the RPL process, you should ensure you have the relevant skills and knowledge that align to the unit(s) that you are applying for. You can do this by reviewing the information for each unit at training.gov.au. If you would like to apply for RPL please contact 1300 177 337 to arrange an initial interview.

Credit for Past Study

You might also be eligible for a Credit Transfer if you've previously completed a unit through vocational or higher education. With formal proof, verified by our Assessors (qualification certificate, transcript, or USI record), you will not be required to undertake training and assessment again for that unit.
